After a warm welcome at the airport, I checked into my charming hotel in Luang Prabang, a town steeped in history and natural beauty. The afternoon promised an adventure, so I hopped on a bicycle, ready to explore this UNESCO World Heritage gem.
The ride began at the Heuan Chan Heritage House, a beautiful example of traditional Lao architecture, and from there, I cycled to the Luang Prabang National Museum. It was once the Royal Palace, and the collection of personal items from the Laotian royal family offered a fascinating glimpse into the life of Laos’ former monarchy.
Pedalling through the quiet streets, I stopped at Wat Mai, its five-tiered roof an iconic representation of the elegant Lao style. The quiet atmosphere of the temple contrasted with the buzz of the city streets outside. I continued along the Mekong River, cycling to Wat That Luang, a hillside temple with stunning town views below. From there, a short walk led me to That Dam, the Black Stupa – mysterious and ancient, standing in the heart of the city.
The journey continued to Wat Visoun, Luang Prabang’s oldest active temple, where I marvelled at the centuries-old Buddha statues. As I pedalled along the Nam Khan River, I arrived at Wat Xieng Thong, undoubtedly one of the most exquisite temples in all of Laos. Its sweeping roofs and intricate “Tree of Life” mosaic were magical.
Before the sun dipped behind the mountains, I cycled back to my hotel, passing Wat Sop and Wat Sen, each temple adding to the allure of this enchanting town. I couldn’t help but feel like I was riding through history, each pedal stroke revealing more of Luang Prabang’s timeless beauty.
Cross the Mekong River and visit a part of Luang Prabang that tourists rarely see. We will cycle a dirt road loop around a district far removed from city life, yet right on the doorstep. On this side of the river, there are many quiet temples and small villages to discover.
It is the scheduled evening for the light parade, every temple in Luang Prabang handcrafts a float from bamboo and paper and parades the elaborate sculptures through the high street before arriving for display and judging at Wat Xieng Thong temple. The floats are then lowered into the river and sent floating downstream in flames. it is the end of Buddhist Lent, and small decorative floating offerings made of banana leaf and marigolds are purchased by everyone in town. The Locals whisper their prayers and wishes to the totem and watch them drift away on the current. it is one of the best nights of the year to experience Luan Prabang.
